Where is the character "Death" in the Book Thief?

Yes, the story is narrated by Death. He did introduce himself (I don't think Death really has a gender, but I'll refer to it as "he") in the beginning, about not needing a proper introduction. While the story will continue to revolve around Rudy, Liesel and the human characters, Death will still be narrating. I can see why it might be confusing.
