What is the best way to study for vocabulary words?

I searched for other answers for this topic but.. everyone says flash cards! Ive tried flash cards and im still getting a bad grade on it or failing it. Gimme another idea or tell me what im doing wrong! I write the Original sentence, Part of speech, Synonym and Antonym and the Word on the back! how can i improve?
